The Sound of N o s t a l g i a: How I Curate Mellow Lofi Hip-Hop

For N o s t a l g i a, I’m often listening for the melody first: a piano phrase, a warm sample, or a chord progression that makes me want to replay the track.

The playlist brings together instrumental lofi hip-hop and mellow jazz-hop with a reflective feel. Relaxed drums are part of the sound, but I’m just as interested in what happens around them—the phrasing, the textures, and the small details that make a beat recognizable.

It shares some ground with C h i l l o u t. Here, though, the emphasis is more on melodic character and a mood I personally connect with nostalgia.

Giving Music Room to Settle In

I don’t replace the selection every week. Once added, a track can stay in the playlist for months when it continues to fit.

That’s a personal approach, not a promise about streams or placement length. Some tracks make an immediate impression. Others become favorites after a few listens, when a small instrumental phrase or a particular sample starts to stand out.

I like leaving time for that familiarity to develop. New music is welcome, but it doesn’t automatically mean an existing selection has to go.

What I Listen For

I review submissions myself, listening for melodic identity, relaxed rhythms, and how a recording works alongside the rest of the playlist.

My preference is for instrumental lofi hip-hop, mellow jazz-hop, and beats with a warm, understated character. Jazz-influenced chords, soft keys, and textured samples all fit the direction, but there’s no requirement for vinyl crackle or a vintage production technique.

I’m more interested in the finished track than whether it checks every familiar lofi box.

You’ll find music from Oatmello and Corduroy Egg alongside other beatmakers. Each selection comes down to music I enjoy and think the audience will appreciate, with enough variety for the individual producers to retain their own sound.

Share the Music You Connect With

If you find yourself replaying a track, save it, visit the producer’s profile, or explore the release it comes from. Sharing the playlist with someone who enjoys mellow lofi beats is welcome too.

Helping listeners discover artists they’ll return to is a big reason I curate. I hope a track you hear here leads you to more of that producer’s work.

Submit Your Music

If you make mellow lofi hip-hop, instrumental jazz-hop, or relaxed beats with a reflective character, I’d love to hear it.

Send a released track and a short note about the fit. I listen for the playlist’s sound and flow, so not every submission will make it in—but I appreciate you sharing your work.
